The Ad-Hoc preparatory meeting for Pacific Islands Young Professionals Forum is currently taking place at the Kansai Kenshu Center in Osaka, Japan, on September 14, 2025.
We established the forum in 2023 and have held 3 conferences so far. The purpose is for us to identify priorities and actual things on the ground based on younger generations' perspectives.
Today, for the first time, we invited undergraduate and postgraduate students from the Pacific Islands who are currently studying in Japan, as well as Japanese students. The Pacific Islands' young professionals make presentations at the sessions on 1. Climate Change & International Law, 2. Disaster Risk Reduction & Sea Level Rise, 3. Solid Waste & Marine Litter, 4. Depopulation by Outflow, and 5. Depopulation by Outflow. In each session, after presentations, they convene group works/discussions including Japanese students.
We expect open and free dialogue so that they can get to know each other and the real issues better. Additionally, most Japanese students are unfamiliar with the Pacific Islands, so I am eager to hear their "fresh" insights from the discussions.
The participants are:
