Today F-san from Guinea attended zoom class for the

first time. With her there appeared on the screen

a two-year-old lively boy and a baby girl who will be

one year old at the end of May.

She spoke her mind, “Neither a child’s hall nor

a community center is open in this corona. We can go

only to a nearby park every day. Growing children

in Japan is really tough compared to in my country or

France. Nursery isn’t available for us, either.

The life now is very hard.” Time for learning Japanese

was short today. Even though, she came to understand

“kamoshiremasen” or “kamo…” which she couldn’t make

out when she heard them many times from a staff

member of a nursery section in City Hall. Seeing her

getting pleased, I was glad, too, and learned another

item together, a potential form. “Hoikuen ni haireru

kamosiremasen”. Your child may be able to go into

a nursery. Hair-u is a verb; enter. Hair-eru is a

potential form of it.

Here ‘kamosiremasen’ means “may”. She was very

quick to learn. She must have been using this form in

her daily life, not knowing she uses it. I hope talking

together in zoom class will make her feel relieved,

even for a little while.
