Hungary 1 [ F], Russia 1 [ M],Mongol 1 [ a boy],
and New Zealand 1 [ F].
Three months ago, a fourth-grader boy came to Japan from
Mongolia. He has attended NiNiC for about one month and
a half. I asked him what he likes.
“What food do you like best?” ------ “I like chicken best.”
“What subject do you like?” ------ “I like mathematics, science,
social studies, Japanese, P.E., music, and English.”
His school held an athletic meet.
“What did you enjoy most?” ------ “I enjoyed dance
[they danced Okinawan dance:Eisaa].
“How about a sprint race?” ------ “I finished second!”
We talked using only words to be understood plus gesture
and a few English words. He answered to my questions
very earnestly. He’s already mastered hiragana and katakana,
and a small amount of kanji.
How wonderful it is that a little boy can learn anything so
quickly!
