３つ目は、ダラン（DHARAN）というカトマンズから直線距離で２００キロほど東の郊外にある街での２日間のワークショップ。リンブー民族とライ民族の人たち、先住民族でない人も参加しました。



参加者は１５人。カメラマンやディレクター、編集マンなどのビデオ制作経験者、ジャーナリスト、ミュージシャン、学生などのユニークな顔ぶれでした。



ここでは、ストーリーの構成方法を中心にレクチャーしてほしいと言われたので、起承転結や5WIH の大事な要素を説明した後、ニューヨークでの銃問題を題材に、具体的な構成例を紹介しました。

どのくらい理解してもらえるか不安でしたが、参加者から「すごく短い時間で、わかりやすい説明をしてもらってありがたい！よくわかった！」と言われ、一安心。このワークショップの間に何か作りたいという希望があったので、２つのチームに分かれて、ドキュメンタリーを作る事にしました。



まずは、構成をそれぞれ作って発表してもらいました。１つは「若者が自ら雇用を生み出す取り組み」。もう１つは「ダム建設工事によって強制的に家を壊されながらも、生活を続けているチャトラ（CHATRA）地区の人々」がテーマです。



2日目は撮影と編集。朝の間に自分たちで撮影しておいてもらい、午後から編集を始めました。「CHATRA」はプラニングの当初から、今回の短いワークショップのテーマとしては重いので別の題材にしては？という意見もありましたが、本人達の強い意向もあり、撮影する事にしました。



やはり撮影は１日では終わらず、少なくともあと３日はかかりそうだったのですが、ワークショップ用に編集して何かを見せたい！という事で、最終的には２作品とも発表、そして意見交換することができました。



ネパールは、政策により、電気の供給が毎日数時間止まります。今回の３つのワークショップでも何回も停電したので、電気のある内に出来るだけ充電。停電後は、ジェネレーターに変えるという、綱渡りでした。
三者三様、参加者もテーマも、それぞれ違っていて、少々不安でしたが、なんとか全て合格点で終えられたかな、と思っています。また終わった後、感謝の印にプレゼントをもらったり、記念写真を撮ったりして、いい思い出になりました。
ネパールの人たちのホスピタリティにも感謝しています。

The third workshop was hold at Dharan, a suburb about 200 kilometers east of Kathmandu. It was a two-day workshop and I was asked to teach how to make a story. We had 15 participants; Limbu people, Rai people and a few non-indigenous people, including video directors, video cameramen, a video editor, musicians, journalists, and students.
I was asked to teach story telling, so I explained two important components: "5W1H (When, What, Who, Why, Where, How)" and “Basic Story Structure (Introduction, Development, Climax, Conclusion)”. Then I showed an example storyboard for a gun-violence film set in New York.



I was little bit worried how much they understood what I was saying but they told me “Your explanation was very clear and very good. Thank you.” …. I was happy to hear that.

They wanted to make a new film during the workshop, so we divided into two teams.
The first day, each team made a storyboard and presented it in the end of the day. One story was about self-employment of young people. The other one was about the Chatra Gorge region in eastern Nepal, about a village displaced due to dam construction.



The second day, the two groups went filming in the morning, and in the afternoon we started editing.
The chatra team couldn’t finish all the filming, which we kind of predicted but they were very enthusiastic to make this because the theme is very important.
They said it would take three more days to finish filming.
But they finished the first day of shooting, they came back to show us for editing.



In the end of day at 7 p.m., the two team finished editing, screened it, and had a discussion. We all felt good from the accomplishment and it was good to see their happy faces.



In Nepal, the government sets a limit on electricity: every day, electricity stops for a few hours or more. So we had to charge computers and cameras whenever we had power as much as we could, and used a generator (if one is available).



Each workshop was different in terms of participants and themes. I was a bit nervous but I think it went well. After the workshop, they gave me gifts and took photos, which made great mementos of my trip.I also feel very grateful to all the people I met in Nepal for their wonderful kind hospitality.
