Corporate Volunteer Activities [2011年06月02日(Thu)]

Mud-rake Volunteer Work by Ogilvy & Mathar Japan (in Minami-sanriku Town)

Corporate Volunteer Activities
--We are ready to help free of charge--

I have reported in my blogs posted on May 17th and 18th that the Nippon Foundation has succeed in organizing student volunteer network, although it might not yet be perfect.

I reported then that it was absolutely necessary to attend a 2~3 hour-lecture before going on to the ground. We are very much aware that there needs to be someone who is versed in the details of the disaster-stricken area to command the team of student volunteers. Therefore we hold lectures to prepare them for the work that awaits them, using video images of the disaster-stricken area, to confirm the location of the evacuation shelters when earthquakes and tsunami occur, and group them into 6~7 people and designate a group leader for each group. Then all the groups will confirm the line of command and instructions with the Team Commander who is responsible for all the participants at any one time.

Without a clear line of command and instructions, the volunteers would just be a mob and not only be unable to fulfill their expected goal but just be a nuisance in the disaster area.

Some companies have also come up to contribute their share in various ways, such as strengthening their leave system, paying for transportation and accommodation to support the volunteer work of their employees. The corporate mechanism for sustainable volunteer activities of the employees is being implemented. It is a welcome phenomenon and I am sure that the participation of the corporate warriors would definitely be of great assistance, especially as I feel strongly and have also pointed out on a number of occasions that the reconstruction of the disaster-stricken area would need a long-term support.

The Nippon Foundation has taken this opportunity to set up a system whereby we are able to provide consultation and advice on such matters as to what and how relief goods should be prepared and sent, the difference between public donation and aid money, how to form collaboration between corporations and NPOs. We are more than happy to provide any help that might be needed free of charge and await your call.
